MY BACKGROUND:
I received my bachelors degree in music education from Concord University, in 1998. I taught in the WV public school system from 1999 to 2003, and have taught private lessons since 1990. Currently, I teach beginning lessons in woodwinds and strings and advanced lessons in flute in my home in Athens near Concord University. Some of my students have received scholarships through the Appalachian Highlands Music Association.
WHAT I TEACH:
- FLUTE: Flute is my main instrument. It is what I do best and what I teach best. I can take students to very advanced levels if they are willing to put in the time.
- OTHER WOODWINDS: Since my main instrument was a woodwind, and I had to learn the other major woodwinds in order to teach them, I can teach students singe and double reed instruments into intermediate levels.
- GUITAR: Although guitar was not my main instrument in college, I took more guitar than was required for an education major. I can teach classical, folk, finger-picking, and flat-picking styles of guitar. If someone is interested in other styles, such as rock-n-roll, there are several teachers I can recommend.
- VIOLIN: I am not a violinist, but I grew up with the violin and was taught how to teach it in college. If you are looking for a concert violinist who can take you to mastery levels, there are two people I would highly recommend. If you want to learn the basics of playing, have fun fiddling, and learn at a steady pace, I may be a good choice.
- MANDOLIN: Since mandolin has many similarities with the violin, I can get someone started and teach them into intermediate levels. Most of my experience is with folk music, but there are plenty of bluegrass books available.
- BANJO: My banjo experience has been primarily classic, but I have delved into folk and clawhammer through intermediate levels. I can teach quite a bit with folk or clawhammer styles, but can’t show good examples of advanced bluegrass technique. For bluegrass banjo, there is an excellent teacher I can recommend.
Tim Mainland received his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and has taught music theory and composition at Concord University since 1978. He teaches advanced lessons in classical guitar, classical bass, and classic banjo to Concord music majors.
